I Don't Get It
It's very interesting how at the start of every season of Big Brother fans complain that it's not as good as the season before it. Now this isn't a rant post against fans of the show by any means so before you get your undies in a wad, hear me out. I have some thoughts I want to get out before this season continues much further.
Longtime fans of the show have a tendency to compare current seasons to Big Brother 2 or possibly Big Brother 3. Newer fans tend to compare the current season with either Big Brother 6 or last season's Big Brother 8. Me? I tend to compare seasons to BB2 but that's just because I absolutely loved the hamsters and gameplay that season. That's not to say that I haven't loved the houseguests in other seasons or their gameplay. That season was just my favorite. But let me be clear on one thing -- I have loved every single season of Big Brother.
There's all this talk going on about how Big Brother is slip slidin' downhill and has lost its moral compass. Gimme a break. The morality of Big Brother is solely determined by the houseguests in any particular season. Think about it. Each and every single one of us knows people like the ones in the house -- this season or previous seasons. We all know a slut, a liar, an attention whore, a free spirit, an ass, etc. These types of people have been in the house every single season. It's nothing new. We've had weirdos before. We've had sluts before. We've had tons of attention whores before.
The current hamsters have been in the house just over a week now and are still getting to know each other. It's easy for us to say that we always present our true selves to everybody we meet. The fact is, we don't -- at least 99% of us anyway. And yes, I include myself in that group. What's that saying? You only really get to know somebody once you live with them? It's true. The ladies' tits and asses will only get them so far. The same goes for the guys' machismo. Eventually, their real selves will come out. And we're the lucky ones in that we get to watch it unfold before our very eyes. Ladies and gentlemen, we have drama.
Surely you don't watch the show, and especially the live feeds, expecting campfire camaraderie and Bible reading. We want excitement. We want scheming, fighting, and even some hanky panky every now and then. We want to watch them try to work their way out of tight situations. In other words, we watch it for what it has always been and will continue to be: A mini social experiment.
So don't fool yourself into thinking you'll be going anywhere. I don't want to be alone when the consequences of Matt and Natalie's late night action comes back to bite them. Because you know it will -- in the house and in real life. All of these hamsters are going to have times like this and I can guarantee you I will be around to watch it all. I might be bitching about it or possibly jumping up and down excited out of my mind. But I'll be watchin'.
Do you have any thoughts to add?

I completely agree, I will admit my jaw has dropped a few times, my eyes have rolled more than a few times, and I have been extremely judgemental of this group, and yet I cant seem to turn off the TV---I even give my husband overnight reports while he is at work! I dont think anyone can compare with Season 2 but I think this one is gonna keep us talking for awhile...moral compass or not:)

Well said Hamster.

I agree with your comments and you are definitely entitled to your opinion on the perceived quality of this season. But, bottom line, this cast is equally as dumb as most prior casts and the gimmick soul mate stuff has soured the season.
To make a comparison, if you watched the Amazing Race Family Edition, you are probably thinking the same thing. That got horrible reviews by fans and former contestants and they went back to the award-winning format they usually had.
Big Brother has produced a show that more people are now turning their TV's OFF for.

I liked the twist this season. And I don't think the couples are going to last this way for long. There will be a swap of partners before long. And the first couple out? They be back. Trust me.

Although I agree with what you said, I have to agree with Bruce Almighty that we are still watching but we've had enough. The purpose of the "game" I thought was strategy and these cute people act like they have never seen the show before. I do not think that the morals have gone down, I blame the producers and behind-the-scenes people. All I kept thinking last night was that I could be watching a similiar show by watching Temptation Island. And while I am not above watching that show (I kinda liked it the first time around) I look forward to BB each year and each year I am a little more disappointed. I do not like the "plots" and twists. I like to see them "hook-up" and fight on their own. But that is just my opinion. Thanks HD!

I agree with what you said also, and we can stop watching if we dont agree with the play in the house. That said I did not like the couples being pair up some with player they did not like, that made it hard on some. This year I will miss the homebodys or housewife they have had in the house . Look to me they are looking for a very young group to watch.
but I being of the older group will still watch.

Well said Hamster Dame. I am waiting to form any further opinions, as we get to know these Hamsters. I know that BB9 will have many suprizes and twists ahead. Time will tell as the HOH changes,( always drama there ), and we watch as couples and alliances form and fall apart. I am just excited to have something to occupy me thru a yucky winter and a sea of reruns.
Posted by: shebart at February 16, 2008 03:16 PM
I find this new season banal and boring.
Posted by: Grace at February 16, 2008 03:50 PM
Feel better HD? You should! That said, here is my two cents!
Nothing I have seen in any BB has come close to BB2. I really enjoyed BB1, BB3, BB6 & BB7. Did not enjoy BB4 or BB5. Did not like anyone on BB8 except Eric, Jessica, Mike and Jen. But damn if I didn't watch and listen to them all!!! AND had plenty to say about them all during their seasons! That's what it's about.
I think that this couple thing they have going is interesting, and totally screws with ones game plans. How inventive of BB! But it will change, watch and see. I suppose then, someone won't like that either! Can't please everyone!
Yes, every year we do have our slut (Danielle), our geek (Zach), our jock (Mike), our Bible thumper (Jamekia), our liar (Dustin), our ass (Amber/Dick), our twist (Eric),and so on and so forth. They are there every year and so are we.
This years cast is very unique, I'll give you that. Very young and not much intelect that I've seen so far. Where I am use to one slut per house, we have several. One macho idiot usually, we have several. Those are the only differences I can see from other years. This cast is pretty open for being so early in the season. But I see that coming from them being coupled with people not of their choice and them not being smart enough to stay true to that partner. We all want to make our own choices, but BB has made theirs for them! Can you imagine the outcome of the AllStars BB if this couples seniero was going on there? No ChillTown! On every BB we see people choose their own friends and confidants. These people don't have a choice! I see them as rebellious young fools, not bright enough to stay true to their partner even when it is for their own good! I think it's great so far. I call a skank, a skank, a dog, a dog, an ass, an ass and move on to the next day! It's a game and I love it. I wouldn't be any place else.... If I didn't like it, I wouldn't watch it. It's that easy!

I've may my to much like an MTV reality show but still watching and trying to make the most of it.
The team concept is definitely throwing things off a bit, I think, because it is a bit of a learning process because this isn't Amazing Race (the only reality show I can think of off the top of my head that pushes a team concept regularly). There is no proven strategies that have proven to work or not work. You see people seeming to repeat a former BB strategy and then they pull themselves back because you have a partner that really counts reeling, or at least attempting, them in. That has been what I have been wrapping myself anyway to try and corner what is making it harder to like.
I definitely think things will eventually pick up as far as game play after whenever the house goes through its official veto ceremony. That is what I am waiting for an anticipating at this point to be the thing that reminds some of these people about the game and what is at stake. It has been to much of a Winter Break party and can see why people are really hating on it but will change.
Jen and Ryan aren't doing that much to fight one way or the other and leaving it to the house. Allison tried to pick things up but got quickly shut down by Parker. Parker has backed off because he seems to be secure that Matt and Nat will take them off the block.
I will have more about my thoughts once the nominations truly are in place.

I don't know why exactly, but I just don't care for any of the house guests this season. I can't put my finger on it. I don't care what they do, I don't care who they screw, I don't care who wins what competition, and I don't care who is sent home. This is the only season that I have felt this way. Maybe I'm gettin' old, but I still like Survivor, so maybe that's not it.

I love what you're saying!! All I can think is how long we have been waiting for this and now its finally here!! Yeah! These hamsters are freakin crazy!!! But thats the reason we watch it... season after season!! Love you HamsterDame!

I couldn't agree more with what you said HD.

HD, I think this is going to be the best ever BB and just hope they do not jerk the show off now that the strike is over. No favs just yet, but this will change once I have seen the hamsters in "action" more. LOL
Posted by: JRN59 at February 16, 2008 05:45 PM
Bravo HD!! Well said. Especially when you wrote, "we've had sluts before." Lord knows that's true in my case!
By the way. Did you hear about James' gay porn video? I just checked out the screen caps. The boy is a star! Damn...

I LOVE BB BUT this season is the worse!!! Both parties are to blame!
1. CBS is to blame for thinking of the couples idea?! What were they thinking?
2. The people in the BB9 house are just plain boring! I have watched and LOVED all BB seasons, but I can not stand this BB season at all! I will continue to watch BB9 and still hope this season will get better!
Amanda, Alex and Parker NEED to leave ASAP!
Jennifer :)

Hi HD I like your comments but I am still waiting to see what happens after the evictions,I am not sure how I feel about the pairs or there game play yet.

What is up with After Dark? All of this quality nudity and they won't show it. Rather they cut away. Pu&&^%$

I love this season so far! This is way better than last year's season. Everybody seems overly sexual, but it's good fun. It's interesting that tonight the house divided into the swingers and the prudes. I like the couples idea as well. It's making everybody come up with a new strategy. I'm even starting to like Natalie! She sure was entertaining tonight!
Posted by: sandic at February 17, 2008 12:57 AM
I have loved BB untill this season. If i wanted to see people having sex i'd go to a porn site. I believe CBS has blown it on this season. I guess one of the qualifications for this season was whoever has no morals. I bet their families are very proud.
Posted by: MVillegranny at February 17, 2008 06:55 AM
GEEEEZZZ- GIVE IT A CHANCE! THE SHOW JUST STARTED FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!
At the beginning of season 8, I didn't care about the House Guests either, and I thought that they just couldn't live up to the previous seasons.
But in a few weeks, I found myself screaming at the TV and the live feeds, emailing and calling all my BB friends! "DID YOU SEE WHAT JUST HAPPENED? THAT FREAKIN' SOB! I HATE HIM/HER! THAT CONCEITED BlTCH! And soon I/we just couldn't get enough and we were all once again caught up in it and loving it...and as usual pulled right back into the BB house trap!!!
I think the point of the pairing is to see who can actually "PLAY" the Big Brother Game. It's like you are put on a team that you aren't completely fond of. Never-the-less, you have to put your feelings aside and do your best to help your team win...no matter what.
I don't think these couples will be together for the entire season, which makes it even more complicated and crazy, and that's what we like- don't we?
I think we are in for a wild roller coaster ride on the first ever Winter BB train!
This fresh new twist may put new conflicts and deceptions into the show and just maybe the best BB entertainment yet!
Posted by: SimplyBeth at February 17, 2008 07:32 AM
I'm one that has said this season is boring and I'm not liking it. Frankly, I compare each season to ALL the past seasons as a whole, not just BB1 or BB5 because I don't remember which is which, but I do remember they were all great.
I've been a fan of BB from the start and always enjoyed it in its premier weeks, but this season has been the worst so far, and there are plenty that will agree. No one person in that house has anything of interest to talk about that indicates they are a grounded individual (and before any of you readers comment on that, yes, grounded individuals can be hamsters!). Is sex on their minds 24/7? These people are making quite the mockery of themselves and I can't wait until they get to watch themselves after they are "free" to see what asses they made of themselves.
In my opinion, what you see now in terms of personalities is what you'll see later; they've already put themselves out there. I won't turn off the show (yet) in hopes that the hamsters make it an enjoyable season to watch. Perhaps it has to do with making this a "love fest" season that is turning me off. It just appears to me that these people are being forced into making this a sexual season. I prefer it happen naturally.
I'll be the first to admit I am enjoying the show when and if that time comes.
Posted by: DJK at February 17, 2008 08:25 AM
I waited and was so happy they had a winter season. Well I have watched it 3 times and it is the most boring bbshow bb cbs has ever put on. If sex and bodies falling out of the clothing is entertaining so be it. Get a porn movie but, come on what scheming and planning does that take. I also have live feed which I used to watch all the time but it is disgusting to watch.I have watched every season and none of them were this bad.to kinky for me.
Posted by: mary at February 17, 2008 08:27 AM
I agree 100% SimplyBeth (not because we have the same name either...).
Next payday-I'll be signing up for the live feeds. I've missed so much already! Thank God for Youtube!
Posted by: Beth at February 17, 2008 08:50 AM
The sesaon is too young yet for me to say yeah or naye to how good it is but that is what the show is all about(making everyone crazy). I'm sad that the gay couple is already toast but it can still be interesting if they bring him back. They will have to break up the couples or keep bringing back evicted people. I'm all for breaking them up.
Posted by: Shirly at February 17, 2008 09:00 AM
Definitely agree HD! I love BB but so far I don't care who leaves, but I believe that's because it's just the beginning of the season, and I'm still trying to figure everyone out. Like last season at the very beginning I didn't like Jessica. But by the 2nd or 3rd week she was my favorite. I think this will end up being a pretty good season we'll just have to wait and see!!
Posted by: nuwhit at February 17, 2008 09:00 AM
I will withhold my judgments as well, but so far i am just not overly interested in any of these people. And this is the first season ever that I have felt that way. I sense the producers hands all over this cast more and earlier than any season that's come before. Most of them seem so plastic and so eager and anxious to perform like dogs in a dog show. But I will keep watching, and hope for the show to kick in for me... CUZ I DO SO LOVE BIG BROTHER.
Posted by: BenF at February 17, 2008 09:01 AM
For those of you enjoying this cast I'm happy for you. It's just not my cup of tea. If I were just bored by them it would be one thing, it's started off boring for me before in past seasons and I ended up enjoying it, but this cast I just don't have anyone that I like enough to care what happens to them. That's a first for me. I don't see that changing. It's like watching a frat party on tv, just not interesting to me. There are too many other places to see girls with fake breasts for that to be a big draw IMO. A lot of these people seem fragile and easily exploited to me and I feel skeevy watching that happen. I have been turning off the feeds because it makes me feel sad and dirty and worse not entertained at all. I've spent many nights till 4 or 5 in the morning watching the feeds and not being able to turn the thing off watching my favorite hamsters over the years, but they have to give us some people of substance again. They forgot the most important element in casting...the heroic charachter that we all want to root for. Who would that be this season?? Where is our Kaysar, Will or Janelle? Is there anyone you would go rushing to vote for America's Choice? I think that's what is missing for me. I just don't care about any of these guys enough to be interested in what happens. It makes me sad because I'm a huge fan, but I think this might kill the franchise. If this is the best they can do it won't matter to me because I will have quit watching and I havne't missed a show or live feed since season 1.

AMEN!!! HD, i couldn't agree more. something you said really struck me as to why I watch...because i am always being asked by my family and friends... why do i care so much and devote so much of my life to the show and feeds each season?...you said "It is a mini social experiment." it was perfect. that is why i watch!!! bravo. i now can explain to everyone why i watch. why i care. i never thought about it in that context but it is brilliant. i have always be a very curious people watching person. i observe behavior and determine my opinion of each one by watching and listening to everything. my husband thinks it is amazing how i can "peg" a person way before he can.
Yes, i know this is just a game...but there is a lot more going on in the house...especially when you watch the feeds ...besides a game. true enough, having no outside connections and having only other HG to be with brings out a completely different person you thought you would be when you went in to the house. everyone goes in thinking they have a plan and they will stick to it but very few follow through. for instance, observing parker since he has been in the house. he came into the game appearing to play it like dick from BB8. all bad ass and calling people out. i think in "real life" he is that kind of person and has spent a lifetime "calling people and situations out as he sees them." the last few days he has become a different, more meek persona. he is on the block and realizes with this group he can't play dick's game. he has had to hold his tongue and lay back. the people in the house and the whole couples theme has sent his game into a tailspin. i have been watching him. parker looks as if he wants to explode. he is in a daze half the time. in my opinion anyway. do i believe this is his "game play " in full, no way! time will tell if i have pegged him right but that is why i love to watch and am completely addicted to this show.
thank you for your opinion and in turn helping me come up with a really poignant explanation as to why i watch!
Posted by: calie44 at February 17, 2008 11:05 AM
Hmmm...soulmates? I think not...Parker said something that rang very true in the wee hours of this morning, not one couple gets along much less like each other (of course other than the token BF/GF) It's inevitable that the couples will be given the opportunity to split at some point...or the couples will just keep hating each other and not playing the game. I love the in-fighting and cattiness..makes for good tv..but in the long run, people auditioning for porn movies and trying to sell books, etc. defeats the purpose of playing this wonderful game. It just makes us nostalgic for when it was a game and the people we cared about cared about the game more than auditioning for the cameras.

Well said my hamster lurking sista! I think some might not be over bb8's drama yet...usually we have a year to recoop...but I couldnt have been happier to see my fav show come early...give it time people...PLEASE keep watching...BB wont let you down...never has..never will!! love you all

How popular will this season be? I guess we'll have to wait for the reviews. My guess is that it is going to drop. I couldn't even watch it. I turned off the T.V. and I'm a T.V. addict.

I have to say this group is so over the top and disgusting it's not funny. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Evil Dick last time round, though I DID whince every once and I awhile. BUT this group make Evil Dick look like The Pope !!. 95% of ANY comment begins wit **ck(in)this or that... And The girls are as Trashy as the guys. Which is worse. C*nt, amoung others that fly around constantly in the BB house is groce coming from a Girl. Sorry.. Look I'm not a prude, remember I Loved Evil Dick I have the feeds and I don't expect bible reading and praying before meals. I Do HOPE for people who have a larger vocabulary that **ck with everything..To be honest its got to the point where it's boring, THEY are boring because they hardly game play, plan, plot, I would love to see some Good ol' BB game play and less descriptions of ALL their sexual encounters. I want BB9 with people who have a clue how to play BB ...Not the porn channel..I honestly am disapointed in the lack of class and intelligence of the players...We deserved Better than a rounded up group of past BB rejects..I dare them to prove me wrong ! PLEASE DO !...I wish they would.! Soon !
